First DIY and Enter the Writers Competition!

So today, to kick off our new DIY (Design/Do - It - Yourself) segment. We are going to be working with denim. Yup, rejuvenate those old jeans and make them look hip and new!

What you will need:

a pair of jeans (preferably dark blue or black)

bleach for whites

water

a bucket (approx.. 2 gallons)

vinger (distilled is best)

scissors

washing machine

long stick/ruler

Make sure your in a room with 'waterproof' flooring. [1] Okay first off you need to cut your jeans to the length you want them to be. I cut mine into a bermuda length (just around the knees).

[2] Next you fill your bucket with bleach. So fill 1/3 (one-third) of the bucket with bleach. 

[3] Then fill the rest of the bucket (two-thirds) with water. Mix if you choose to.

[4] Now the somewhat tricker part, put the stick/ruler through all the belt holes of the jeans. And lay the jeans in the water. The lower you put them in the water. The less blue will remain. If you don't have a stick like object, just lay in the jeans in the bucket like this (look below). 

[5] Leave the jeans in the bucket (filled with bleach water) for at least 6 hours. And a maximum of 10 hours.  Bleach can erode or 'eat' the fibers of your denim. So don't leave it in too too long. 

Once your ready to take out the jeans, make sure you have the vinegar ready (it stinks). Set the jeans aside and pour out all the water and rinse the bucket throughly if you don't have a second one. Once you've rinsed the bucket fill it with as much vinegar as possible. But filling it half way is more that enough. Let it sit in the vinegar for at least 15mins and you can leave it as long as you want. But the longer its in the vinegar, the harder to get rid of the stink (ew). Vinegar stops the bleach from 'eating' you jeans. 

[6] Throw the jeans in the washing machine with NOTHING else. And only use detergent. No fabric softener, no bleach. And tumble dry or hang.

[7] Optional, when you finish your tumble dry cycle, start loosenig up the ends of your jeans to created a "destroyed" look.

And there you have it, homemade acid-wash cut-off jeans. Hope you liked it!
